The great Zig Ziglar said it best “Money isn’t everything, but it ranks up there with oxygen.”

We live in a world that is ruled by money. Almost everything we do on a daily basis is tied to money in some way. We live in homes that are purchased with money, we drive cars purchased by money, we wear clothes purchased by money and we eat food that is purchased by money. More money can mean a better life, more money can mean fewer problems. Typically when we are asked how much money we want, the answer deep inside of ourselves is always “more”.

Many people struggle and work hard each day to earn more money. The sad thing is, many of these people do not understand what money is. How can you earn more of something that you do not understand? How can you master something if you don’t know what you are trying to master? Sun Tzu the great military strategist said:

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

The translation of this famous quote from war to money would be: 1) If you know yourself, and understand money, you will never have to worry about money and will always have it. 2) If you know yourself, but do not understand money, you will suffer a loss for every gain you make with money. You will never get ahead. 3) If you do not know yourself and do not understand money, you will lose money whenever you encounter it and will be broke and constantly in debt.

Most people think that money is a from of exchange, or a currency, or a lubricant for life (why scrape through life when you can slide on by?) All of the above definitions are true, but the best definition for money that I have ever seen is:

“Money is an idea backed by confidence” -Ron Hubbard.

The man who works hard for money, works hard for another man’s idea that has become confidently supported by others. Companies become real when investors gain confidence and invest in them. The dreams of great visionaries like Apple by Steve Jobs or Disney by Walt Disney have become concrete once their visions and ideas gained the confidence of others.

Today, brands like apple and Disney have supreme confidence and are worth billions of dollars in stock and revenue. Apple has gained so much momentum it is now the most valuable company in history.

Money only has value, because enough people are confident in the idea of the money itself. In history, sea shells have been used as money, gold, silver, fur, salt, pepper, paper and digital numbers have all been money at one point in time. All of these systems are flawed and none of them have any real intrinsic value. The confidence that backs the ideas is much more important than the actual money itself.

Con men (short for confidence men), throughout history, have been successful at swindling fortunes by exploiting the human weaknesses of others through dishonesty, honesty, vanity, compassion, credulity, irresponsibility, naiveté or greed.

Con men present an idea, create confidence and once those two elements are in place, the victims fall prey to their weaknesses and will transfer their money to the con man who will promptly disappear with a fortune.

There is very little difference between an illegitimate Con Man and a real deal entrepreneur like Steve Jobs or Walt Disney in that they 1) create a clear idea and vision and 2) sell the idea with confidence.

The primary difference between a Con and a legitimate businessperson is that the Con has no real business, asset or investment, while the real businessperson has a tangible business asset or investment. Regardless of the validity of the scheme, the sales process for getting the money is the same.

But how does this affect you?

We all want more money, and since money is an idea backed by confidence, to create money, you must first create confidence. The amount of money you have will directly correlate to the amount of confidence you create.

Self confidence and trusting your decisions is the base of all wealth and is a pre-requisite for attracting money either through sales or through investor capital. Break a man’s confidence and you will also break his bank account. Raise his confidence and you can make him into a god.

Here are 12 Quick ways to raise your confidence:

1)   Get a makeover and create a professional appearance

2)   Keep a physically fit body

3)   Learn to speak well and have a wide vocabulary

4)   Keep well groomed

5)   Show up on time

6)   Have an assertive and firm hand shake

7)   Start small in your business and grow fast

8)   Take on projects that are easy to complete and slowly increase the complexity over time.

9)   Become the expert on your subject; know everything there is to know.

10) Get a coach or mentor to guide you through your studies

11) Share your successes with others, analyze and study your defeats

12) Teach others to sharpen your skills

In North America, for the past 100 years, we’ve had an astounding progression of wealth. Every generation from 1900 has enjoyed a better life with more opportunity and more amenities than the last. Our grandparents (the war generation) who lived on the farm gave their children a better life by moving to the city. The children (the baby boomers) grew up and got manufacturing jobs, then the next generation grew up, went to university and got middle management or intellectual careers (Generation X) and today we are at the next step in the progression: Generation Y.

Unfortunately, where other generations had an “easier” time claiming a better life than their parents, I can see that Generation Y will be the first generation to be poorer than their parents.

The poorest person today in North America has far more amenities than a wealthy man 200 years ago ie: flushing toilets, heated water, refrigerators etc. Even in the poorest households in Canada, first world amenities are available. We live in a very wealthy time, but unfortunately, like musical chairs – the music cannot go on forever and eventually someone is left without a chair. In the game of inter-generational musical chairs, generation Y will be the generation “without a chair”.

I know first hand how difficult it is for Generation Y to fit into the ever-changing economy. I’m born in 1986, graduated from high school in 2004, university in 2008 and hit the job market later in the same year. I did everything conventionally ie: go to school, get good grades, get a degree, get a good job and instead of landing a promising career, I wound up with post grad depression and lay on the couch for months while trying to find something that matched my talents, skills and useless degree.

The sad part is, in 2004 after high school, I took a summer job painting houses for $10 per hour and I worked that summer job every year until I graduated university in 2008. In 2004, minimum wage was $6.50 per hour, so $10 per hour was a great deal. By the time I finished school in 2008, minimum wage had inflated to almost $10 per hour. My first job out of school was a dead end, telephone sales, straight commission, middle of the night job that earned $10 per hour even after hitting my sales targets and ranking in the top 5 sales people. I felt like I had sold out and was sold a fraud. I was better off skipping school and opening up a house painting business. I remember seeing that skilled painters could make around $30 per hour and I was now making $10.

Today in 2013, in Winnipeg, Manitoba where I live, minimum wage is now $10.45 and it will be increasing again next year – along with the price of every single commodity in the economy.

But forget my first hand experience, why is it that Generation Y will be poorer and have a more difficult life than their parents, the baby boomers?

Here are 15 reasons why:

1)    Faster changing job market

a.     Generation Y will statistically change jobs every 4 years. It is no longer feasible to get into a career or company and stay for life – the world is changing too rapidly and labor is always in flux. There is a high probability for Generation Y to learn and relearn skills many times throughout their lives and they will not be able to stay in one place very long.

2)    Highly skilled knowledge workers are needed and formal education does not offer young people what is required.

a.     We live in a primarily knowledge based economy today where the skills to survive are not readily available. For myself, I am an entrepreneur and the knowledge and skills required are unavailable from traditional education institutions like universities and colleges. Apprenticeships and internships are coming back so that young people can actually learn practical skills needed for a successful career. For the last 10,000 years, humanity has acquired skills through apprenticeships. Universities, as trade schools are a relatively new idea, and an idea that fails to deliver what it promises.

3)    Too many options

a.     Having no options can be a luxury, in today’s world, too many options is certainly a burden. Making a choice to commit to a career is more difficult nowadays because young people are bombarded with hundreds of options. In reality, we only need one path to become successful, but the illusion of too many options creates doubt and inaction.

4)    No mentors/parents

a.     Where the baby boomers enjoyed a nuclear family ie: Mom, Dad and a collection of brothers and sisters. Most of the Echo boomers or Gen-Y families are divorced. Many young people don’t have access to the guidance or mentorship that other generations had access too. In the old days, if your father was a blacksmith, you were a blacksmith and he mentored you. Today, you barely know your father, hardly see him and when you do see him, he has nothing valuable to say.

5)    Increasing inflation ie food/clothing/shelter

a.     The economy is inflating at a rapid pace. Items like food, clothing and shelter get increasingly expensive every year while wages stay the same. A rising minimum wage doesn’t help because when the bottom rises, so does everything else in relation to the bottom. Buying a house was once a necessity for the baby boomers and for the echo boomers it may become a luxury or impossibility.

6)    Increasing education costs and education fraud/deception

a.     Education is increasingly expensive year after year in both Canada and the United States. In Canada, we have a much easier time financing education, but sadly, many students leave school with a mortgage of student debt (minus the house). In contrast, our parents could finance education with a few months of work at a summer job at the end of the school year.

7)    Fewer workers are required

a.     Businesses require fewer and fewer workers to do the same tasks. Between my laptop and cell phone, I do not need to hire a secretary because the technology can handle the work of many people. Other technologies wipe out entire classes of workers like 1) ATM’s replacing bank tellers and 2) automated factories have mostly replaced human assembly lines ie: the decline of Detroit in the last 60 years.

8)    Manufacturing has moved overseas – global competition, not local

a.     Generation Y not only has to compete with the local boys and girls for jobs, they also have to compete with their peers in India, China and around the world. I can hire a graphic designer for $300 in Toronto, or get a similar product for $30 from Pakistan. Sadly, $30 goes a long way in Pakistan and the designer in Toronto can’t even make the rent on $300.

9)    Increasing household debt

a.     Not only does Generation Y have more debt through student loans, the entire household that they come from has more debt than ever. Low interest rates has made debt affordable and not only is Generation Y loaded with credit card debt, The boomers (their parents) have remortgaged their home with a Home Equity Line of credit, have multiple auto loans, and maxed out credit cards.

10) Parents who cannot retire and will become a burden

a.     We are sold a fantasy of retirement in North America that at age 55 (or 65) you will get to golf and lie on a beach all day. The reality is that the vast majority of baby boomers will never retire and shortly after the “kids” move out (generation Y), the “parents” (baby boomers) will be moving back in with the kids (to their small home or apartment that is unaffordable). However, this isn’t too terrible, around the world in Europe, Japan, China, India, and even North America 100 years ago, it was normal for inter generational families to live together. Unfortunately, the dream of the retirement that the “war” generation had is smashed forever for the sweeping majority.

11) The deception that 30 is the new 20, lost time

a.     Somehow, generation Y is one of the most “babied” generations in history. Adulthood is now pushed towards 30 because of overbearing parents and over sheltered kids. It also takes more resources and more time to do things that were once normal like 1) Moving out of Mom and Dad’s basement and 2) Starting a career that can provide a living. Losing an extra decade to school or “finding yourself” will severely affect your long-term wealth and ability to invest for your future. An extra 10 years for your money to grow can in theory allow you to have twice as much principle in the future.

12)  Less work ethic

a.     Along with an over sheltered generation Y is a poor work ethic. Generation Y is more interested in Facebook and Twitter than they are with putting in the time and getting ahead. Bill gates used to say “Your grandparents had a word for flipping burgers, they called it opportunity”. It amazes me to see how little interest there is in “getting your hands dirty” or “starting from the bottom”. Gen Y wants to be handed the corner office on a silver platter.

13)  More materialistic

a.     Because Mom and Dad were “keeping up with the Jonses”, their children, Generation Y, are much more materialistic than their parents were. Their parents had to slave away and save for years to afford the house in the suburbs and two brand new cars (purchased on credit). Without ever working to earn, young people want to keep up with the illusion of success and have financed their glamorous lifestyles on 1) student loans 2) credit cards or 3) hand outs from mom and dad. Sadly, all of the resources above will eventually run out and when they do, the over spending youngers will be hit harder than a heroin addict going cold turkey.

14)  The attitude that “we should have it better” than our parents, when in fact, we will have it worse.

a.     Many young people do not even try to enter the job market or start at the bottom and work their way up. They remain underemployed working at Starbucks while trying to become an actress, artist, musician, writer or some other esoteric dream without facing reality. The truth is, generation Y will have a much more difficult time growing up and raising a family than the boomers did and we will have to work much harder than our parents ever did to achieve the same lifestyle.

15) Technology changes the game every 5 years or less

a.     The last threat to Generation Y is that technology is changing every 5 years (or less). New jobs are being created and old jobs are being deleted just as fast. We can never predict which technologies are coming next and which industries will be forever changed or wiped out. Think of Blockbuster getting annihilated by Netflix or the traditional record labels becoming wiped out by Napster and online music. There are always young and hungry entrepreneurs looking to wipe out the dinosaur businesses of the past.

I don’t want to appear to be overly pessimistic in light of all of the facts above. There is more opportunity in the world than ever; new jobs, new markets, new technologies and new businesses can be created in record speed and magnitude. However, it will take a smarter, harder working, and more creative generation to capture such opportunities and that is what Generation Y must focus on becoming.

"Loyalty is the fabric that holds relationships together." - Stefan Aarnio

Loyalty is one of the rarest commodities to be found these days. In a world where everyone seems to have their own agenda, where can one find loyalty and how can we measure it?

I have always found it easy to do joint ventures with other business people and investors because I understand one key fundamental. To work together, two parties must share one common goal, or mission. If two people have the same mission, working together on a venture is simple. Loyalty happens when two parties can keep their missions aligned over time.

As my business grows, I have to bring on more and more team members. I have been burned in the past with bad team members, but have slowly built an outstanding team. Entrepreneurs and self employed business people are always apprehensive to add more team members because we want to have full control at all times. However, the larger we get, the more team members we must add.

How do I choose my team members?

I have always believed the mantra of the American billionaire Bill Bartmann "Hire slow and fire fast" and "hire for aptitude, fire for attitude":

1) Hire slow and fire fast: When considering bringing on a new team member, take your time and make the "courting" process long. Have the new team member jump through many hoops before offering them a position. I used to belong to an organization that thrived on having all potential employees work for free before becoming full time staff. The organization had stellar people working for it because the bar was set high. On the flip side, when the disease of negativity is spreading through your ranks - fire fast! As soon as you sense a team member becoming jaded, negative or poisoning the minds of your other team mates, then fire them as fast as possible. Negative energy and negative attitudes are a cancer that must be dealt with quickly if your business is going to survive.

2) HIre for aptitude, fire for attitude: When I am bringing new people onto my team, I do not care if they have paper "qualifications". I am more interested in their passion and personal ambition. I want to know if this team member finds their work exciting and enjoyable and if it fits into the larger vision in their life. Happy people are infectious and they attract success. In contrast, a poor attitude of a single team member can destroy an entire team. I was recently going to hire a realtor to sell a house I had just finished renovating; she had all of the qualifications and was recommended by one of my colleagues - she had the aptitude. However, her attitude was so negative that after listening to her talk for 5 minutes, I changed my mind and fired her on the spot. Attitude is everything, especially in selling and business, the right attitude can bring your organization to the stars and the wrong attitude will smash it on the rocks.

Recently, I have been looking for an apprentice to become my successor and take over the daily operations of my real estate business. There are many qualified individuals and many people who would like the have the position. With so many qualified prospects, decision making can be hard, how will I make a choice?

The #1 attribute that I am looking for in an operations manager is loyalty. Loyalty these days seems to be a forgotten virtue of ages past, but I can still find a few loyal people if I look hard enough.

But what does it mean to be loyal?

Loyal people stay faithful in their primary relationships, stay with their employer without "shopping around" for other jobs, and can manage to create relationships for life through exclusivity.

There are far too many business people who will chop of the heads and hands of their partners to get one step ahead. Unfortunately, the world does not need more of these people.

So how do you find the best and most loyal people for your team?

Divide the people you know into three categories:

1) The loyal and trusted - These people are proven, they are loyal and have the same mission as you - they have no reason to change course! When you have someone in this category, do everything you can to keep them happy and keep them on your team. Billion dollar businesses are built by assembling teams of these people. The loyal and the trusted are gold, especially in today's economy.

2) The "watch carefully list" - as soon as I see someone on my team show signs of disloyalty somewhere in their personal life or business, they go on the "watch carefully list". Does this mean I will not do business with these people? No. It just means that I must handle these people with extreme care and know that they will not  be around for the long term. They are short sighted and can't see the big picture. If these people get too greedy or ambitious, they may become traitors.

3) The blacklist - These people are proven traitors. When I am betrayed by a team member and trust is broken, I may forgive, but I will keep proven traitors on the blacklist and they will receive no further business from me. The quickest way to stop bleeding is to cauterize the wound and seal it with fire. As soon as I can sense betrayal, I will quickly move the offending team member to the blacklist from which they shall never return. "Fool me once, shame on you… fool me twice, shame on me".

The lessons I have learned about loyalty, traitors and relationships have been hard fought from the school of life. No business school in the world can teach you how to spot a traitor or how to deal with them. Business schools also cannot teach you about cherishing loyal partners for life. Sometimes the hardest lessons in life must be learned first hand, but once you have weeded out all of the bad apples, you will be left with nothing but the sweetest fruit on the tree.

Jim Rohn, an american entrepreneur, once said "If you don't design your own life plan, chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much."

I always struggled with the idea of getting a job. Some people call their job a J-O-B which stands for Just, Over, Broke.

From age 17 to 24 I struggled every year with employment. When I was in university, every summer, I had to go out and "get a job" to pay for next year's tuition. Every year I would procrastinate, the idea of a job bored me, and I felt in my heart that I didn't want to work for someone else. Every summer was different, I worked at Tim Hortons, local restaurants, odd painting jobs, and even had a short taste of direct sales. Nothing felt good and every year as the summer would approach I felt myself feeling depressed.

In 2008 when I graduated from university with an Arts degree, the game was over. My parents and society both agreed that it was time to leave the fantasy world of school and join the "real world" and get a "real job".

I had made most of my money in university by teaching guitar lessons out of my mother's living room and had made a good little cash business out of it. I also played numerous music gigs throughout the city and had experienced the life of being self-employed. Now that I was done school it was time to "wake up", shut down my little business and join the real work force.

I followed the advice of my parents, society and the status quo and got a real job in telephone sales. I worked in the middle of the night, on straight commission and although I was one of the top performers in the office, I only made about $10 an hour selling on the phone. My life was completely upside down, I was making less money at my "real job" than I was making it my guitar teaching business, my quality of life was the lowest it had ever been, and I was isolated by working the graveyard shift.

After a few weeks of working my real job, I fell into a depression. Everything I had done was "right". I went to school, got a degree, and got a job, but I was living a miserable life and was making less money than I made in school doing things I enjoyed less.

What was wrong with me?

Looking back, I realize that I was living a life of convenience, not a life of choice. Everything that was in my life came to me by way of convenience. Nothing was consciously chosen by me and this was the source of my unhappiness.

They say there are only two sources of unhappiness in the world:

#1 is not getting what you want
#2 is getting it (not what you want)

When we get something we do not want, unhappiness ensues.

The downward spiral of unhappiness and dissatisfaction continued for years until I learned to take control of my own mind and use it towards endeavours of my choice.

As the great Napoleon Hill writes in his book "Think and Grow Rich":

Everyone comes to this world with the privilege of controlling the power of his mind and directing it to whatever ends he may choose.

At birth, everyone carries the equivalent of two sealed envelopes:

  1. The RICHES You May Enjoy If You Take Possession Of Your Mind & Direct It To The Ends Of Your Own Choice.
  2. The PENALTIES You Must Pay If You Neglect To Take Possession Of Your Mind & Direct It
In the contents of the first envelope named RICHES are the following blessings:
  • Health
  • Peace Of Mind
  • A Labor Of Love Of Your Own Choice
  • Freedom From Fear And Worry
  • Positive Mental Attitude
  • Material Riches Of Your Own Choice & Quantity
In the envelope labeled PENALTIES are the prices one must pay for neglecting to take control his/her own mind:
  • Ill Health
  • Fear & Worry
  • Indecision & Doubt
  • Frustration & Discouragement Throughout Life
  • Poverty & Want
  • The Evils of Envy, Greed, Jealousy, Anger, Hatred and Superstition


For many years I allowed others to take control of my mind and I drifted through life living a life of convenience with very few elements being of my own choosing. After I hit "the bottom" through depression, poor health, fear, doubt, worry and debt, I began to design the life that I wanted.

Today, I have made drastic changes and every aspect of my life has been chosen by me. Perhaps there are parts that are not 100% of my choosing, but every single aspect is improving steadily towards my vision and my ideals.

All of the improvements in my life came from having a concrete vision of what I desired. I began to write down my goals, my wants, and my vision. I began to reverse engineer and design the life that I wanted. I am very happy to enjoy the blessings that Napoleon Hill names above and be free of the penalties he warns against.

In your own life, ask yourself: Are you living a life of convenience or a life of choice? If you are living a life of convenience, begin to write a vision plan detailing every aspect of your ideal life. When your vision is put into words and written down, the subconscious brain will begin working towards the life of your dreams.

For centuries, alchemists searched for the "Philosopher’s Stone"; a magical instrument that could turn lead into gold and they never found it. Every day fools buy lottery tickets hoping to turn “lead into gold”.

 

Explorers searched the globe for centuries looking for the "fountain of youth" only to never find it. Every day women in department stores spend millions of dollars to cling onto their fleeting youth.

 

Every night audiences in the hundreds of thousands stay up late into early morning watching infomercials promising "get rich quick schemes", "get rock hard abs now" and dating programs that promise that the woman of your dreams is "one phone call away".

 

We all want success to be easy.

 

We all want the silver bullet or the magic wand that will make things “easy” and change in an instant.

 

We all want the secret sauce that will make us an overnight success. These days, it takes 10 years to become an “overnight success”.

 

Success is never as easy as it looks!

 

What if we could increase our probability for success by focusing on one certain personality trait?

 

There have been hundreds of studies on success and scientists have found that it has nothing to do with intelligence, talent, luck, resources, contacts or education. However, studies have proven that there is a specific personality trait called "grit" that is directly correlated to success.

 

Grit is a psychological trait that indicates a person's passion for a particular long-term goal. Grit is associated with perseverance, resilience, ambition, need for achievement and tenacity.

 

To make a long explanation short, the grittier a person is, the harder they will fight to succeed.

 

People with high levels of Grit are concerned with winning the marathon, not the sprint. They are long-term thinkers that aim to achieve long-term goals and are less concerned with short-term challenges and failures. A person with a high level of Grit will move from failure to failure and keep their eyes on the prize.

 

To quote Winston Churchill; "success is moving from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm". Churchill understood Grit and he was able to capture the hearts and minds of the British people in World War 2. Throughout nearly the entire war, Britain was the underdog; suffering defeat after defeat from the Nazis. However, Churchill was able to inspire his people to become gritty, dig in and hold on. In the end, the Nazi war machine ran itself to destruction and the British were able to claim victory by sheer tenacity despite being the underdog for nearly the entire war.

 

Many of our parents/grandparents who were who were born in 1920's became extremely gritty due to the fact that at age 10 they were in the great depression, by age 20 they were fighting in a world war. If they were strong enough to survive those two events, they came home, built themselves a house with their bare hands, raised four or more children and worked like a slave until they retired (or died).

 

The World War 2 generation was a very gritty group of people compared to the baby boomers or the echo boomers. The World War 2 generation understood that:

 

1)    Life is not easy

2)    Persistence wins

3)    Hard work is required for success

4)    Giving up is not an option

5)    Life is not always fun, but keep going

 

Today’s young people are not conditioned to be gritty like their grandparents/great-grandparents. Today we live in a world of instant text messaging, facebook, twitter, video games, instant microwave dinners and soccer tournaments where the losers are taken out for ice cream.

 

Gritty people are able to delay gratification and often, this is the #1 key to success. Unfortunately, we are conditioned today to want instant gratification and many of us forget how tough our grandparents had to be to survive and thrive in the last 90 years.

 

If you are a success-minded individual, you should focus on becoming more “gritty”. To do so:

1)    Set long term goals

2)    Train yourself to not be discouraged by failure

3)    Learn to delay gratification

4)    Become passionate about your cause

5)    Never give up

6)    Focus on winning the marathon, not the sprint

7)    Reward yourself for lasting power, do not become a flash in the pan.

 

Consider Aesop’s fable; The Tortoise and the Hare. The Hare is speed, he is flashy, he is loud and in the end he is the loser. The Tortoise is slow, persistent, consistent and gritty.


Be the Tortoise, not the Hare: the future belongs to you.

If you were offered $35,000 a year to sit at a toll booth and collect change from cars crossing a bridge, would you take the job?

Or would you decline and look for the next opportunity?

What if you were paid $100,000, $200,000 or $300,000 for the same task? Would you take the job?

What if you were paid $1 a year to sit at the same tollbooth?

For myself, I would not sit at the tollbooth for any amount of money because money earned at the tollbooth is “dead money”.

We are human “be-ings” not human “do-ings”.

Daily tasks that help us become the person we want to become create life, energy and success. These tasks have purpose, feed our spirits and nourish our souls; By performing tasks we enjoy, we become the person we want to “Be”.

If a task or job does not bring us closer to the person we want to become, we earn dead money and in some ways, waste our time, effort and energy.

Eventually if you earn enough dead money, you won’t be able to get out of bed in the morning.

Dead money is a term I learned from Raymond Aaron, a New York Times best selling author. Raymond explained that the money he earned from his published books that were unaligned with his core purpose were “dead money”. In some ways, these books hurt his brand, wasted years of his life and were very expensive in opportunity cost.

In my own business, I make sure every action I do advances my career by building brand-equity or by earning cash AND brand equity. If I am able to monetize my actions and build my brand equity at the same time, I make the biggest gains in spirit and in my bank account.

My mentality is: Even if I earn $0 at the end of the year, but have built a $1,000,000 brand, I succeed. Steve Jobs paid himself a salary of $1 while he was the CEO at apple because his mission was to build the company and put a dent in the universe by challenging the status quo. I have a similar philosophy to Steve Jobs who I have idolized since 6th grade when I first learned about who he was and kept a picture of him on my desk at school.

I am fortunate enough to aware of my brand and purpose, the average person does not consider his or her brand, his brand equity, who he is, who he wants to become or where he is going in life. For the average person, this is very unfortunate.

These people are stuck in “dead end” jobs that are either high paying or low paying and every dollar they earn is a “dead dollar”. The dollars they earn do not build their dream or advance their career.

If you earn enough “dead dollars” you will eventually build the bars of an emotional prison.

Money is a medium of exchange and a currency because it needs to move in order to be relevant and useful like electricity or water.

If money stops moving, money dies.

If people stop moving for long enough, people die.

If the spirit stops moving, the spirit dies.

If you are earning money in your career, but are NOT moving towards becoming the person you wish to become, your career and spirit will eventually die.

Years ago I used to work Frito-Lay, the company that makes Lay’s chips and Doritos. I used to put chips on shelves at Wal-Mart every morning at 4:00 am and I earned a disproportionately high salary for doing so. Walmart employees stocking chips at 4:00am were making $8 per hour, I was making closer to $20 per hour to do the exact same task.

However, every dollar I earned was dead money.

The money was dead because although I was earning money daily, I was not advancing towards my goal of becoming an entrepreneur. The money was good, but my soul was dying. I was becoming a professional shelf stocker and not a professional entrepreneur. I was NOT advancing towards the person I wanted to become. The life that I wanted was not being built with my actions and consequently I was earning dead money that did not help me in my pursuit of happiness.

Many people think that earning money in itself is a good return on time, but in fact, earning dead money is a complete waste of time, waste of spirit and a waste of life.

Would you rather live a life of poverty doing what you love or a life of riches in a life of indifference?

Most people will say that they would rather do what they love and live in poverty. However, 70% of people are not happy with their current jobs or current careers.

70% of people earn dead money every day.

A wise man once said “Talk is cheap and money buys the whiskey.” What this wise man is saying is that most people say whatever makes them sound good: “I would rather do what I love” but their actions do not align with their words.

Remember: Talk is cheap and Money buys the whiskey.

I’m not saying that we should choose a life of poverty out of passion to pursue what we love. I’m a firm believer that we can “have our cake and eat it too”.

I think it’s 100% possible to do what you love, monetize it and become rich. 

I believe you can have it all, happiness, love and money. When it comes to happiness, love and money; there is always enough for everyone.

Obtaining happiness and money is a topic of major study for myself at this time in my life. What I find is that the more I love my career, the more I love my daily routine, the more fun I enjoy, and the more money I make.

Fun = money.

Love = money.

Enthusiasm = money.

Money = life.

The more fun, love and enthusiasm I enjoy, the more life I have, and my wallet benefits as well.

I have abandoned the pursuit of “dead money” and if a task or job doesn’t line up with my mission, my vision and who I want to become, I will not perform it.

Do what you love and the money always comes.

Complete the mission and the money always comes.

Provide enough value and the money always comes.

Money is a result of a job well done; it is an effect, not a cause. Actions performed at a level of excellence equate to money earned. Money itself can never motivate someone to be better, achieve excellence or create more value because money intrinsically has no value.

Money is intrinsically dead, we are the ones who breathe life into money. People are the ones who attach external value to money and we use it to build our dreams.

Money is neutral and money doesn’t care. Money doesn’t cry for you when you are sad and money won’t drink champagne with you when you want to celebrate.

Money will, however, buy you a bottle of champagne.

Money can either be alive or dead depending on how we earn it. It is up to us as the wielders of money to respect the neutrality of money, breathe life into money and allow money to flow through us in our personal pursuit of happiness.

Money, life, spirit, happiness, enthusiasm and joy are all currencies and we must allow them to flow.

If we allow money, life, spirit, happiness, enthusiasm and joy to flow through us, we will become congruent. We will prove our integrity and the universe will reward us for respecting it’s laws and creating abundance.

If we shut off our spirit, enthusiasm and joy, then we also deactivate the spiritual power of money and the power of life.

If we deactivate the spiritual power of money, the money we earn will die the moment it touches our hands. Instead of using our earned money to build our dreams, our dead money will build an emotional prison around us where we are forced into slavery for the all-mighty dollar.

When we align with the person we want to become, we earn the Midas touch and everything we touch turns to gold. When we are out of alignment, we earn the touch of death.

Ask yourself; do my daily actions help me become the person I want to become? Am I earning dead money? What is my purpose? How am I achieving my purpose?


We all have the Midas touch if we can find our purpose deep down inside of ourselves. Respect money as a tool; respect the neutrality of money and the power of money. Allow money to live and money will let you live the life of your dreams.

Disobey money, kill money and you will find yourself in financial prison. Don’t let money die.

Protect money and it will protect you.

In North America, the middle class is quickly becoming an endangered species.

In many ways, opportunity for middle income jobs is disappearing quickly as the jobs migrate overseas to India, China, Brazil and other up and coming economies.

In both Canada and the USA, we are quickly becoming a third world country.

The best definition can find for a third world country is: A country where there is no middle class – only rich and poor.

There are many factors that threaten and endanger the middle class, some of which are:

1)   Unions and inflated labor prices in North America that keep the USA and Canada from competing on the world market

2)   North American consumer demand for the lowest possible prices of consumer goods aka: Wal-mart. North American consumers will not pay premiums for locally produced goods.

3)   The death of American manufacturing

4)   The Federal Reserve, Quantitative easing and inflated money supply

5)   Rising oil, food and real estate prices as a result of Quantitative easing.

6)   Rising minimum wage while middle income earners have stagnant earnings

7)   Technology that eliminates certain jobs every year, ie: Clerical jobs replaced by automation.

8)   Rising taxes and fiscally irresponsible governments

All of the above factors are a threat to the shrinking middle class and as the world becomes more global, many more middle-income jobs will disappear.

Why hire an assistant in Winnipeg for $12-$15 per hour when you can hire a virtual assistant who speaks perfect English with better education in the Philippines for $1.50-$4 per hour?

An MBA graduate in the USA costs a company $300,000 a year while the same MBA graduate from India costs $30,000 a year.

The world is changing rapidly and, for many, it is time to make a decision between joining the ranks of the rich or poor.

Eventually, there will be no middle ground in the North American economy. If a person wants to keep living a middle class lifestyle, he or she may have to move to Brazil.

If given the choice between living rich or poor, everyone always says they would choose to be rich. However, when you survey the actions of the average person, it is quickly evident that most people choose  a life of poverty over a life of wealth.

The top 5 reasons why “Poverty Sucks” and why you need to be Rich in the next 10 years.

1)   You don’t get what you want in life: People who choose a poverty mindset over a wealth mindset ask themselves “what is the cheapest thing I can afford?” For these people, life is controlled and dictated by prices – not value. When you go to a restaurant for dinner, do you order the cheapest thing on the menu? Or do you order what you actually want to eat?

2)   Lack of Freedom: When you have a poverty mindset, other people make critical decisions for you. Most people are 100% controlled by their government and their employer. If you want the freedom to make your own decisions, it may be time to build a wealth mindset. Every great experience in life has a price of admission, if you want the experience, you have to pay for it. America’s jails are filled with people who have absolutely no freedom. Most American prisoners made less than $10,000 per year before entering the prison system. When you are impoverished, you are stuck in survival mode and cannot get into “creation mode” where you can freely create wealth and the life you want.

3)   Lack of confidence and health: Lack of funds creates stress. Everything in life is difficult if you cannot pay the price of admission. Stress is a major threat to health and wealth. Lack of funds also creates a lack of confidence, which can be a vicious cycle. No funds equals no confidence and no confidence equals no funds. If you are in this cycle, break it immediately.

4)   Broken Homes: The #1 cause of broken homes and divorce is financial stress. Financial infidelity aka: hiding bank accounts, secret spending and secret credit cards ruins trust and relationships. Divorced families are much more likely to be faced with poverty and financial problems.

5)   Debt: Nearly 50% of the families in the USA are 1 paycheque away from bankruptcy. We live in a paycheque to paycheque society where overspending and money mis-management makes debt a necessity for survival. Today with credit cards, it’s easier than ever to get into debt. Although debt is a convenient way to take care of immediate problems, it is a double-edged sword. Debt will let you do the things you want today while robbing you of the things you want in the future.

All of the above reasons can create cycles of poverty that are very difficult to break.

Unfortunately, in the future, there will only be rich and poor in North America unless some major changes are made. I have heard many experts say that next 10 years will be the biggest wealth transfer in history and best time in history to become very rich... or very poor.

The USA is in a recession that may turn into a depression and this means that businesses, real estate and other assets will be on sale. There will be more opportunity than ever to become wealthy.

The best part of living in a free country like the USA or Canada is that each of us has the ability to choose between becoming Rich or Poor.

Are you dead at 67?

Retirement for many North Americans is a dream that many people wish to have. The first wave of baby boomers is starting to retire in the next few years, however, many of them are not prepared to stop working.

The definition of retirement is “to take out of useful service” and what happens to so many hard working people is that they die shortly after being “taken out of useful service”.

Working at a job is a a social pursuit that can add purpose and meaning to a person’s life and so many people highly value the social aspect of working.

If a person decides to retire and loses the social environment that they have been in for the last 10, 20 or 30 years, they can suffer a serious blow to their happiness and life can become very difficult.

If you look at human history, there are virtually no examples of societies that have a “retirement” with golf courses, meal plans and retirement homes.

Life spans have been short throughout history and people generally worked until they died. In some cultures, the elderly would live with their children and help out around the home, but they still did a considerable amount of domestic chores and kept “working” without retirement.

Many baby boomers have the vision of retiring on a golf course like their parents did and sadly, I don’t think this will be a reality for most of them. My opinion of the “golf course” retirement is that it has been an anomaly that only one generation in human history has been able to enjoy.

Unfortunately, the “golf course” retirement has been artificially created by the WWII generation before the baby boomers.

The WWII generation financed their “retirement” on debt and fiat currency. Like most debts, they have been able to pass the bag onto their children (the boomers).

Historically speaking, the “golf course” retirement was created early in the industrial age and it was mathematically engineered by highly skill actuaries. They calculated that for every year a person worked after age 55, the worker’s lifespan decreased by a proportionate amount of years.

“67” is the magic year because it the shortest amount of retirement that the company would have to pay. Age 67 is the year that the average worker would statistically die after working until age 65.

What this means was that many retirement plans were designed around a worker working from age 18 to 65 with a 2-year retirement followed by a quick death at 67.

“Retirement” plans were never designed to support people and their families into their 80’s, 90’s and 100’s. These retirements span 20, 30, 40 or even 50 years and they were fundamentally designed to support 2 years.

Most companies with defined benefit plans were betting on their employees dying 2 years after 65. Statistically today in North America, both men and women live to be nearly 80 years of age and the number is climbing as healthcare improves.

I saw a statistic the other day that said that between Obamacare, social security and medicare, the United States has 80 Trillion dollars of unfunded liabilities. The amazing thing is, 80 Trillion dollars is more money than the entire world’s money supply.

No one can pay this liability, not even the USA with it’s unprecedented money printing abilities.

The USA could print their way out of the problem, but would completely devalue their currency into oblivion in the process.

Many of the pension funds, retirement funds and mutual funds that the Boomers are relying on for retirement are all invested in the paper assets that are extremely vulnerable to market fluctuations.

Furthermore, these assets are all timed to liquidate at the same time. The baby boomers are the largest demographic in North America and in other parts of the world as well. These people will be selling their large family homes at the same time (in specific suburban sub-markets), liquidating their stock portfolios and will begin systematically withdrawing from the markets in 2016.

What happens when everyone reaches his hand into the cookie jar? Although there should be, there are not enough cookies in the jar for everyone and some of us won’t get a cookie. The stock market works like this and when everyone wants to sell, values deflate and many people will not get their full (inflated) value on their assets.

When the baby boomer garage-sale begins, who will be in line to absorb these large suburban family homes, stock portfolios and other assets?

My prediction is that the younger generations, namely the echo boomers, will not have the purchasing power to absorb their parents’ assets. There has been a large shift in the middle class and the entire middle class workforce has migrated from North America to Asia.

As well, the purchasing power of the echo boomers has been damaged by long term no-value university programs and many do not enter the work force until mid twenties or later.



Furthermore, many echo boomers are loaded down with student debt racking up into the hundreds of thousands.

It is common for students nowadays to leave school with a houseless “mortgage of student debt”.

What is most unfortunate is that these students cannot go bankrupt to get out of their debt obligation.

I don’t have a crystal ball to predict how these demographics, fundamentals and laws will pan out, but there will be chaos and chaos brings opportunity.


If you are a savvy investor, you will be able to find some serious bargains on assets in both Canada and the USA.

However, if you are on the other side of the equation and expecting to retire in the next few years, you may need a back up plan to hedge against your current investment portfolio.

I don’t want to preach doom and gloom; I prefer to be optimistic about the future. However, we are set up for a perfect storm in the next few years and I truly believe that we will see a major transfer of wealth.

It’s up to you to get educated on the things I have written about in this article and do your best to prepare for the perfect storm… Otherwise, it may be better to die at 67.

Why Are Horny Frogs the best Marketers?

In nature, male frogs attract female frogs by croaking loudly in mating season.

From the female perspective, a deeper croak equates to a bigger frog. Female frogs want the biggest male possible to mate with to produce the biggest offspring. In mating season, female frogs listen for the deepest, loudest croak they can find.

If you are a big frog with a deep, loud croak, you get access to any female frog in the jungle. However, if you are a small frog with a small croak, attracting a female can be very difficult.

So what is a small frog to do?

Small frogs can be smart frogs.

A small frog, who is a smart frog, will hop into a drain pipe or a large cavernous space. Once he's inside the pipe, he will croak as loud as he can. The cavernous pipe amplifies the sound of his croak and makes him sound deeper and louder.

Suddenly, the small frog sounds like a huge frog and he can attract an endless stream of ready and willing females.

Although life is easier as a big frog, not everyone is a big frog. 

What if you are the small frog in your business? 

What if you are already a big frog and want to be a gargantuan frog?

We can learn a lot about business when we study the mating patterns of frogs.

5 FUNDAMENTALS THAT MAKE HORNY FROGS INTO MARKETING MACHINES:

1) MINDSET - You don't have to be a big frog to win like a big frog. Think big, find ways to get the results that the "big frogs" get while still staying small. Play the game like a professional from day one and practice thinking big.

2) AMPLIFY - Small frogs use leverage to make their croak bigger, deeper and louder. Whether you are a small frog or a big frog, we all need to amplify our message to reach the market. Find your message and amplify it to your audience. Objects always appear larger from far away and use every broadcast channel to your advantage: Radio, TV, social media, email, youtube, google etc. to broadcast your message.

3) ATTRACT - Smart small frogs know that chasing females is a complete waste of time. Instead, they know how to attract and seduce prospects. Why chase? Let business come to you. Set up your branding and marketing so that you have a laser focused message that attracts the right qualified prospects so that you never have to chase again.

4) OVERSELL - A great marketer once told me "always oversell... even if you have the goods, always oversell". Create a frenzy by playing to the emotions of your audience and oversell your inventory. Use scarcity: If you have 3 items to sell, sell 6. Manipulate supply and demand to create a frenzy by overselling.

5) DON'T PLAY FAIR - Exploit your unfair advantage over your competition and play the game on your terms, not theirs. Find out what your "secret sauce" is and pour it on everything. Make the game unfair so that the odds of success are stacked in your favour and set yourself apart from your competitors. Make your products and services the only choice in the market by differentiating yourself with an unfair advantage.

In business and in the jungle, it's always survival of the fittest. However, whether you are the fittest or not is completely irrelevant when you play the game like a horny frog. Have the mindset of a big frog, amplify your message, attract your audience, oversell, and never play fair.

Find ways to apply these principals in your business and begin dominating your market. Whether you are a small frog or big frog, find a pipe to croak in and watch your prospects line up for a chance to work with you.

What do you do when you are under pressure?

Do you crack? Do you fold? Do you avoid and hide from the world?

Or do you stand up, get stronger, and push harder to persist?

Pressure makes diamonds... but it can also crush people.

Years ago, when I attended my first Real Estate seminar, the speaker asked "And what about stress...? After you have made your money, do you think the stress goes away?"

Almost every hand in the room went up and the room was silent.

After a long pause, the speaker continued "Stress never goes away, and you must learn to manage it. Just because you have more money, does not mean that your stress levels change."

Throughout my life, I have constantly placed myself in high pressure situations. I played music at a professional level, I was a national leader in direct sales and I'm currently playing the highest risk/reward game in the world: entrepreneurship.

Somehow, I have always been attracted to high pressure situations because I am naturally a competitive person and have always wanted to compete and work with the best.

For me, the pressure has always been necessary for me to push to the next level: pressure makes diamonds.

Of course, being under pressure is extremely uncomfortable and it can take it's toll on your sleep, your comfort and over all quality of life. But looking back on my life so far, the greatest, most exciting, relevant moments have been the ones of greatest pressure and greatest importance.

In contrast, my most unhappy, joyless, depressing moments have been the moments of absolutely no pressure.

We all remember the days of high school where we would have an exam in 3 weeks...

3 weeks would go by and we would neglect to study.

30 hours before exam, we would still neglect studying...

8 hours before the test starts we are up all night trying to learn Calculus while trying not to over dose on caffeine.

Somehow pressure can bring out the best in people.

Pressure brings clarity, decision and action to people who normally have confusion, indecision and passivity.

Pressure shows us who we really are and can bring out the hero OR the wimp inside of us.

Pressure lets us know what we are made of and lets us know how far we can be pushed so that we can see where our limits truly are.

One of my favourite things about pressure is that it brings out our natural instincts.

Instinct is not a common topic of conversation in our modern world because we think of feral cats, wild dogs or rabid beasts as having instincts - not civilized people!

Civilized people do not have instincts...

Or do they?

Kathy Kolbe is a theorist and educator who developed a test called the Kolbe index.

The Kolbe index is a series of short questions that measure your instincts show you what your strengths are when under pressure.

For myself, this information has been unbelievably helpful. It also explains why I am happiest under pressure.

The reason why I am happiest under pressure is because I am forced to become my natural self. 

Pressure brings out my natural instincts and allows me to pursue the "best version of myself".

My Kolbe index tells me that under pressure I "improvise". People with instincts similar to mine make great salespeople, public speakers, on camera people, radio hosts, interviewers, storm chasers, video game designers and non-conventional educators.

All of the above "careers" are high pressure, performance based career paths that require little or no formal training to achieve success.

This would explain why I am least happy in low-pressure situations and most happy in high-pressure situations. 

Pressure forces me to become who I naturally need to become.

Pressure is what turns coal into diamonds and it also turns a raw undeveloped average person into a refined success.

I would encourage you to take your Kolbe index and find out what your instincts are and find out how you work under pressure.

Find out what your natural skill sets are, where you are happiest and then focus your whole life and business around that skill set.

For myself, I need to "improvise" all day long to feel full-filled and happy. I have re-organized my entire business around myself being able to "improvise" while key team members around me handle all of the other tasks.

By pursuing this strategy, I have seen greater success, experienced more fun, and felt more excitement. All of this can be had from selecting the tasks and roles that excite my instincts.

Please take a moment to invest in yourself, learn about your instincts and harness your talents. You're worth it.
