The great Zig Ziglar said it best “Money isn’t everything, but it ranks up there with oxygen.”

We live in a world that is ruled by money. Almost everything we do on a daily basis is tied to money in some way. We live in homes that are purchased with money, we drive cars purchased by money, we wear clothes purchased by money and we eat food that is purchased by money. More money can mean a better life, more money can mean fewer problems. Typically when we are asked how much money we want, the answer deep inside of ourselves is always “more”.

Many people struggle and work hard each day to earn more money. The sad thing is, many of these people do not understand what money is. How can you earn more of something that you do not understand? How can you master something if you don’t know what you are trying to master? Sun Tzu the great military strategist said:

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

The translation of this famous quote from war to money would be: 1) If you know yourself, and understand money, you will never have to worry about money and will always have it. 2) If you know yourself, but do not understand money, you will suffer a loss for every gain you make with money. You will never get ahead. 3) If you do not know yourself and do not understand money, you will lose money whenever you encounter it and will be broke and constantly in debt.

Most people think that money is a from of exchange, or a currency, or a lubricant for life (why scrape through life when you can slide on by?) All of the above definitions are true, but the best definition for money that I have ever seen is:

“Money is an idea backed by confidence” -Ron Hubbard.

The man who works hard for money, works hard for another man’s idea that has become confidently supported by others. Companies become real when investors gain confidence and invest in them. The dreams of great visionaries like Apple by Steve Jobs or Disney by Walt Disney have become concrete once their visions and ideas gained the confidence of others.

Today, brands like apple and Disney have supreme confidence and are worth billions of dollars in stock and revenue. Apple has gained so much momentum it is now the most valuable company in history.

Money only has value, because enough people are confident in the idea of the money itself. In history, sea shells have been used as money, gold, silver, fur, salt, pepper, paper and digital numbers have all been money at one point in time. All of these systems are flawed and none of them have any real intrinsic value. The confidence that backs the ideas is much more important than the actual money itself.

Con men (short for confidence men), throughout history, have been successful at swindling fortunes by exploiting the human weaknesses of others through dishonesty, honesty, vanity, compassion, credulity, irresponsibility, naiveté or greed.

Con men present an idea, create confidence and once those two elements are in place, the victims fall prey to their weaknesses and will transfer their money to the con man who will promptly disappear with a fortune.

There is very little difference between an illegitimate Con Man and a real deal entrepreneur like Steve Jobs or Walt Disney in that they 1) create a clear idea and vision and 2) sell the idea with confidence.

The primary difference between a Con and a legitimate businessperson is that the Con has no real business, asset or investment, while the real businessperson has a tangible business asset or investment. Regardless of the validity of the scheme, the sales process for getting the money is the same.

But how does this affect you?

We all want more money, and since money is an idea backed by confidence, to create money, you must first create confidence. The amount of money you have will directly correlate to the amount of confidence you create.

Self confidence and trusting your decisions is the base of all wealth and is a pre-requisite for attracting money either through sales or through investor capital. Break a man’s confidence and you will also break his bank account. Raise his confidence and you can make him into a god.

Here are 12 Quick ways to raise your confidence:

1)   Get a makeover and create a professional appearance

2)   Keep a physically fit body

3)   Learn to speak well and have a wide vocabulary

4)   Keep well groomed

5)   Show up on time

6)   Have an assertive and firm hand shake

7)   Start small in your business and grow fast

8)   Take on projects that are easy to complete and slowly increase the complexity over time.

9)   Become the expert on your subject; know everything there is to know.

10) Get a coach or mentor to guide you through your studies

11) Share your successes with others, analyze and study your defeats

12) Teach others to sharpen your skills

Too many people wake up in the morning at an average time, go to an average job, settle for an average relationship and live an average life.

There is nothing wrong with average, but the sad thing is, there is nothing right about being average either.

Years ago when my rock band split up and my dreams of becoming a rock star were smashed, I felt myself slipping from special to average. I was no longer the cool guy with the band, instead, I was just an average guy, with an average job, an average degree and I had no way to distinguish myself from other people. My identity was lost.

If there is one thing in life that I feared most, it was becoming average… But why did average scare me?

Average people with average lives scared me because I observed that they neither won nor lost. If life were a game, they were only playing to avoid a loss. Winning isn’t even an option for most average people because they are so terrified of losing that the thought of winning becomes an impossibility.

Unfortunately for everyone, average or not, life begins when we decide to “play to win”.

The Dalai Lama when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered “Man, because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future, he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

So many people, every day, live their lives avoiding failure, avoiding loss, avoiding their dreams, their passions and their callings. We want to avoid pain, but when we avoid pain, we also eliminate the possibility of pleasure and joy. When we eliminate the possibility of losing, we also eliminate the possibility of winning.

Imagine a hockey team where every single player on the ice is playing defense. Imagine a real estate investor who never buys a single property. Imagine an entrepreneur who takes no risk and no action.

All of the examples above are destined to fail, by being unwilling to be exposed to failure, risk, pain and the possibility of loss, winning is an impossibility.

As an artist, I learned that art, to be art, must contain an element of risk. Art without risk is meaningless junk. The artist who takes no risk, produces no art. Surely, there will be hundreds or thousands of failures, but the true artist needs only one success and to justify a thousand failures.

Thomas Edison failed nearly 10,000 times before he discovered the light bulb. As an enlightened man he said “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that don’t work.”

Venture capitalists know that only 1 out of 27 companies they invest in will succeed.

World class salesmen know that they have to knock on hundreds of doors to make a sale.

Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and later became the most celebrated basketball player in history.

The Beatles were rejected by numerous record companies before landing a record deal. Today the Beatles are regarded as “the best band of all time” and they will likely hold the title forever.

Oprah Winfrey was told that she would never make it on television. Today Oprah is one of world’s richest women win the world and has her own TV network.

However, all of the above people have become world class successes and timeless success stories for the history books because they made a decision in their lives to 1) Stop playing the game of life so defensively aka: “not to lose” and 2) Start playing to win.

We only get one chance at life, we only get “one shot”, so make it count.

“If you had one shot, or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted. one moment
Would you capture it or just let it slip?”

-Eminem

You don't need a band to be a Rock Star: You need a BRAND to be a Rock Star.

"A rock star is the intersection between who you are and who you want to become" -Slash, Guns and Roses.

Years ago between the ages of 16 and 22 I focused heavily on my dream of becoming a "rock star". I wrote songs, put a band together, promoted local rock shows, created websites, sold merchandise and focused on the dream of "rockstardom."

Looking back on the things that I loved about the concept of  becoming a "rock star" was:

  1. To be recognized
  2. To perform at a high level in front of an audience
  3. To have my own business
  4. To be in control of my own future
  5. To have creative control of my art-form
  6. To travel the world
  7. To have passive income
  8. To build a collection/portfolio of work
  9. To earn a nice living
  10. To be free from answering to a boss or a J.O.B.

When I look at my life today, at age 26, I have achieved all of the above and I no longer have a band.

I have a theory that we never really love music, art, dance, poetry, fine food, travelling or anything else that we are passionate about...

Instead we love the FEELINGS that we get from experiencing music, art, dance, poetry, fine food, travelling etc.

Rock music doesn't matter, what matters is the feelings we get from the music.

Although I "quit" pursuing the "rockstar" dream at age 22, I have achieved all 10 of the things I wanted in Music from Real Estate instead.

The work doesn't matter, what matters is the feelings that come from the work.

You don't need a band to be a rock star: you do, however, need a BRAND.

The concept of a rockstar really is a concept from the 1970's. Bands/musicians like Led Zepplin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison etc. embody the glory of rockstardom.

When we translate the 1970's concept of a Rockstar into today's market of 2012, there are virtually zero universally recognized modern rock stars.

A list that I was reading for fun the other day was the "30 richest drummers in the world" when measured by net worth.

What interesting about the bands/drummers on the list was that NONE of them started after the year 2000. Most of the bands/musicians on the list are from the glory days of rock'n'roll in the 1970's and the rest are scattered throughout rock history. A select few became famous in the 1990's at best.

Many people have said throughout history that "rock is dead" and I would agree; especially when we examine a list like the one above.

Although "rock is dead", living life as a rockstar has never been more alive.

The only difference between the rockstars of today and the rockstars of the 1970's is that the rockstars from the 70's all had bands.

The rock stars of the new millennium have BRANDS instead of bands.

I believe that it is much more important to build a brand than a band/business because a successful brand can be attached to a business very easily ie: Gene Simmons of KISS has attached his brand to 100's, if not 1000's of products and is able to spawn dozens of businesses and licensing deals. KISS is a brand that has made more money than The Beatles and will likely continue to do well after all of the KISS members are dead.

Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, and Jimi Hendrix are all examples of excellent brands that make approximately $50 Million dollars per brand annually, even though the "rockstar" behind the brand has been dead for years.

A modern example of a "rockstar" would be Mike "The Situation" from MTV's Jersey Shore.

All of the reality TV stars on Jersey shore are devoid of talent, however, they are highly visible and have a well defined brand with broad appeal. In 2010 alone, Mike "The Situation" made $5 million dollars just off of endorsements and other deals.

The formula is simple, create a great brand, attach a business, rinse and repeat.

Up and coming musical rockstars have lost most of their power, especially rock'n'roll musicians because there is no longer any centralized distribution for music: Traditional radio is fragmented and listenership is down, Satellite radio is highly fragmented, online music is highly fragmented and no one has really figured out how to properly monetize and control the internet. Television is more fragmented than ever and channels like MTV do not feature music or music videos anymore.

Creating a rock star brand is not as easy as showing up on American Band Stand or the BBC as it once was because of all of the fragmented channels.

Modern musicians (especially rap musicians) are focusing more on building great brands and attaching satellite businesses to their back-end. Some examples I can think of immediately are:

  1. Lady Gaga,
  2. Jay-Z
  3. Kanye West
  4. Beyonce
  5. 50 Cent

The brand is greater than the band.

Both music and business are trending towards brands in the modern economy.

All of this information may be great if you are in the music/entertainment industry, but what does this mean for you and your business?

All of this information means the following:
  1. Brand value is more important than ever, focus on creating a visible, high quality brand at all costs. Brands can be monetized later if they are built properly.
  2. Visibility is more important than ever. Find a niche, become visible and become the leading expert in the niche.
  3. You don't need talent or a band to have a great brand. Consider Mike "The Situation".
  4. Focus on monetizing the "back end" of your brand and not the front end. Modern musicians like Kanye West look at their music as a "commercial" for themselves and make money on the back end NOT the front.
  5. Build a great brand and diversify your back end as much as possible. No one has a crystal ball and we never know what the next trend is going to be. Have a mother brand with a diverse portfolio of back-end businesses (think of Virgin, Richard Branson's brand with 400 companies under it).

10 Business Card Sins and How to design a professional card.

Remember: Please share this article if you find it educational!

We only get one chance to make a first impression.

The world is an extremely judgemental place. People judge our clothes, our posture, our hair, our skin, our grooming, our watches, our shoes, our belts, our bags/briefcases, our fingernails, our jewellery and  our hygiene.

Absolutely every aspect of your physical self is under scrutiny from others 24/7 and we always rate the social ranking of our peers (whether conscious or not).

We are very quick to judge and can determine very quickly if we want to "deal" with someone based simply on appearance.

When it comes to networking and meeting people I have heard theories like:

  1. The first 3 seconds will earn you 3 minutes
  2. 3 minutes will earn you 30 minutes
  3. 30 minutes will earn you 2 hours
  4. 2 hours will earn you a day.

This kind of sounds like dating, doesn't it? The above formula applies to dating, business and networking. Meeting people is a courtship, a process and an art form.

Many people can get a fairly good image together, enough to have a 3 minute or thirty minute conversation, but one aspect of "first impressions" that I feel like many entrepreneurs, networkers and real estate investors fall apart on is the business card.

I know how hard it is to put together a good, well laid out professional business card because I have failed at it at least a dozen times in my life.

This year alone I'm on my 6th run of business cards and I'm still tweaking my formula to get it right.

Different cards are relevant for different industries and send different messages.

I can take a glance at someone's business card quickly and know instantly where they are at with their career or business.

Here are 10 business card sins that send the wrong message to the people around you:

1) Neon Card = Broke, needs attention because he/she doesn't know how to get attention in other ways.
2) Picture on card = Self Employed, potentially broke.
3) "Get FREE cards on card" = Cheap, run away.
4) "Bob and Sally Smith" (2 names on card) = Not committed enough to get separate cards, run away.
5) Card that looks like $100 bill = broke person.
6) Card that boasts $500 referral fee = salesman who doesn't know how to get real referrals.
7) Card that says "Specializes in" with too many items = specializes in nothing, doesn't have a niche or identity.
8) Home made card = disaster, not serious and cheap.
9) Card with yahoo/hotmail address = not serious, will repel serious people.
10) No logo on card = either super classy or very very bad identity with no branding.

I have really studied business cards this year because I have sent the wrong message out on 5 runs so far. My 6th run is getting closer to perfection.

A general rule of thumb for a business card is "Would Donald Trump put this on his card?" If the answer is "no", then YOU DO NOT put it on your card.

Who said success was hard? This is a very simple rule to follow. At the bottom of this article I have posted the business cards of Donald Trump, Abraham Lincoln, Bill Gates, Ben Franklin and Albert Einstein. Notice the similarities.

Here is the formula for a good card:

TOP LEFT = Your Logo, company name.
YOUR NAME
YOUR POSITION (Hopefully not CEO or President)
YOUR WEBSITE
YOUR PHONE NUMBER (No personal cell numbers)
FAX
EMAIL ([email protected])
OFFICE ADDRESS OPTIONAL.

Remember: Your business card is NOT a billboard, do not make it scream from space. Be professional, look professional, act like the boss and people will treat you like the boss.

Happy printing,

Working for FREE: If you want to be broke, work for money. If you want to get Rich, work for FREE with Canadian Rich Dad Darren Weeks

10/26/2012

By Stefan Aarnio
Freedomway.ca

Today I spent the day in Edmonton with one of my money partners at the Fast Track SuperConference hosted by Darren Weeks. Darren is the Canadian Rich Dad, one of my mentors and a man who taught me a lesson that has made me successful to this day. I owe much of my success to Darren because I developed a skill set that very few people have (and one that is almost impossible to obtain because so few people teach the art of raising capital). When I worked for Darren I learned 1) How to sell and 2) The art of raising capital.

Darren Weeks is an extremely successful Canadian entrepreneur. His company, the Fast Track Group has been in the top 100 of the fastest growing companies in Profit magazine 3 years in a row, and when I worked for Darren, his team was the 40th fastest growing company in Canada. In my opinion, Darren's personal talent is his ability to identify and assemble groups of amazing people and with unbelievable talent who are motivated by a mission greater than themselves.

Contrary to traditional business models, The Fast Track Group was built around giving out "more education than anyone in the industry". There are few businesses who give first and receive second.

Darren prides himself on the fact that he provides more FREE value to the market than anyone else. To some people, giving out FREE information and building a business around it sounds insane, costly and risky... but I think that consumers nowadays expect FREE gifts and services before they buy - it's the trend in modern business.

Business models that revolve around FREE gifts and services are especially strong in the financial and real estate sectors right now.

When I was 22 I attended the Fast Track Super Conference in Edmonton, I was absolutely blown away by the calibre of the company. I loved the mission, I loved the people and I loved what the company was doing for Canadians. I wanted to be a part of the group, I could feel the energy and it was infectious.

One thing Darren always used to preach when he was educating his audiences was "if you want to get rich, work for FREE." He would often pick out a young man or woman in the audience who would be just entering the work force and ask them "can you afford to work for FREE?"

Almost every time, the young man or woman would say "absolutely not!" and then Darren would teach the lesson.

The difference between the rich and the middle class/poor is that the rich do not work for money, they work for FREE. This may sound completely ridiculous to your belief system, but hear me out:

Lets consider two scenarios.

In my personal life, when I was in my early twenties, I had two jobs at two different times. At my first job I worked for money, at my second job I worked for FREE.

MY FIRST JOB (WORKING FOR MONEY):

At age 22 I worked at Frito Lay Canada and my job was to merchandise (which is a fancy word for putting bags of chips on the shelves at 4 in the morning at Wal-Mart).

My primary motive for working with the company was the salary and the hours. I was truly chasing the dollar in every sense of the word. I wanted a salary so I could get mortgages to buy real estate. I took that job for the wrong reasons, didn't learn the proper skills in the field and it became harder and harder to get out of bed every day when I worked there. I had no passion for the industry and felt that there was nothing to learn.

When I left the company, I had maxed out my purchasing power for properties and but had acquired ZERO skills towards building my own business. Since I had chased the dollar, I had a small cash reserve on hand, however, I had built NO SKILLS or contacts. Although I had made a little bit of money, I had built no human equity in myself, no skills and had no way of propelling myself forward towards my goals, hopes and dreams. In a way, I had traded time for money, lost my time and had crippled myself in a way.

Most people don't consider the skills they learn at work. My advice to young entrepreneurs is to leave their job once they stop learning the skills required to do it. Always work to learn. Move from job to job until you have all of the skills required to run the business of your choice.

Lesson: When it comes to work NEVER chase the dollars, find what excites you, find where your heart is and chase your passions. The money doesn't matter and it always gravitates towards the most enthusiastic people.

MY NEXT JOB (WORKING FOR FREE): I had heard Darren Weeks say on stage "If you want to get Rich, work for FREE". I took his advice, although it challenged my belief system, but I had nothing to lose so I and volunteered for his company whenever he was in town.

Every time Darren was in town, I would dress up in a suit, show up early, leave late, pack and unpack books, process paperwork, seat people, help out with sound-production and do any task that was required of me. I expected NO financial compensation and just wanted to be on the team.

I volunteered for Darren for three years and I applied to work for his company three times. Twice I was rejected for the job and the third time I applied I said, "I have been volunteering at this company over the past 3 years, I have applied twice and been rejected, I will keep applying until you hire me".

I then flew to Edmonton and volunteered at a Fast Track Super Conference event shortly after my interview. Darren Weeks noticed that I had flown from Winnipeg to Edmonton (on my own money) to volunteer to work for him. After the event, he personally took the time out of his evening to offer me a job with the company.

What Darren didn't know was that I had already been hired to start work with the company and on the following monday I was to begin formal training.

Consider the lesson: working for FREE and volunteering had grabbed the attention of the founder of the company and had brought me onto the team OF MY CHOICE.

Now that I was positioned in the only company I wanted to work for, I got paid to learn more about the topics I was already passionate about. I was in heaven.

I got paid to sharpen my skills and become an extremely valuable asset to myself. I learned the art of sales, how to do public presentations, how to run an office, how to recruit good employees, how to fire bad employees, prospecting, sales tracking, databases, securities regulations and public speaking.

Most importantly, I learned how to raise capital and work with investors. This has been my "secret sauce" in my business and it's what sets me apart from other real estate investors who DO NOT have the skill set.

These skills are the base of my empire and the building blocks of my portfolio. I have based my entire career and current business around skills that I acquired by working for FREE.

Had I not volunteered at the company first, I would have had no chance of working with them. I would be of no value to their tribe and I would not have learned the skill set that makes me valuable today.

Every morning, you would still see a wandering soul putting bags of Doritos on the shelf at Walmart at 5:00am. I would have throttled passions and big dreams, but no way of executing them or aligning with other people who matter.

Lesson: Every week I meet young people who are passionate about a certain field or career. Many people say they are passionate about music, art, acting, sports, television, radio etc. and don't know how to break into those "hard to enter" industries. Whenever I study a highly successful person, I notice that almost all of them worked for FREE scrubbing toilets, mopping floors or doing the most pointless jobs at the bottom of the barrel just to be a part of the industry of their choice. Unfortunately, young people today do not see such opportunity.

Steven Spielberg began his brilliant career in film by just "showing up" to the movie studio, wearing a suit and pretending to be a director in an abandoned office. He was a film student who pretended to work there and snuck into the studio every day. The people at the studio assumed he worked there and eventually his passion for film brought him an opportunity to make his first film.

Steve Jobs of Apple was too poor to pay for his college education so he collected aluminum cans on campus and would cash them in to eat his next meal. Jobs had no money, so he would sit in the university classes for free and let his mind absorb the information. The FREE classes he attended for no credit became the building blocks of the apple philosophy. Steve was genius who blended liberal arts with technology. If he were paying for the classes and chasing marks/credits, he would not have been so creative and open in his approach.

Trent Reznor, the frontman of of the iconic band Nine Inch Nails, got a job as a janitor at a recording studio where he mopped floors and poured coffee for 8+ hours a day. He shared an apartment with a friend and ate peanut butter sandwiches for years just so that he could earn studio time to make his debut record in the middle of the night when the studio was vacant.

The most brilliant people in the world, the people who are at the top of their game and dominate their fields with enthusiasm, passion and leadership often started at the bottom working for FREE.

The reason why working for free is so powerful is:
  1. It gets you in the door, an employer can't say "no" to free labor
  2. You make contacts in the industry of your choice immediately
  3. You learn the business form the "ground up"
  4. When a job opens up, you are first in line because you are at the business and eager to work anyways - you are the best choice!
  5. If you aren't passionate about the industry you won't last long, you will weed yourself out to find your true passion
  6. Over time you gain experience and you will either be hired by the company you are volunteering for OR A COMPETITOR of theirs. This is a no lose strategy if you stick with it.
  7. You free your mind from "chasing the dollars" which can limit your creativity. You will approach the industry with a creative, fresh perspective. This is priceless in the long run.

If I lost everything tomorrow, had no skills, no money, no contacts and no experience I would re-discover what I am excited about and offer to work for FREE in the industry.

Of course I would need some income to live, so I would get a job at McDonalds for 8 hours of the day (or another McJob) that is not too stressful, then work for the company of my choice for FREE in the other 8 hours. I would continue this 80 hour a week routine until I am hired by the company of my choice and then I would quit my McJob.

I would then gain all of the skills I need to be successful in my industry and re-evaluate my position. I would likely find a way to start my own business in the same industry and leave as fast as possible as soon as I stop learning.

Exercise: Take a step back from where you spend your time on a daily basis. Ask yourself: Are you chasing dollars? Or are you building valuable skills in an industry of your choice? Is your work based on passion and enthusiasm? Would you keep working there if they stopped paying you?

I used to say when I was in the music industry "You know you're in the right industry when you can work 18 hours a day, lose money and still wake up the next day to do it all over again." Follow your heart and make a choice of passion and NOT logic.

Local Winnipeg Artist, Real Estate Developer and Entrepreneur Stefan Aarnio has launched a program open to all charities in the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Although successful at selling his locally for profit, Mr. Aarnio's successes in Real Estate have allowed him to produce Art that is no longer commercially for sale.

All of Stefan Aarnio's current and ongoing art pieces are to be donated and sold through charities only, all proceeds collected belong 100% to the charity. Stefan Aarnio has made the decision to have all of his artistic work serve a higher purpose.

Our program has been launched with a donation to Jubilee Fund, a charity specializing in funding small, local entrepreneurs who cannot secure traditional financing.

It is our mission to serve as many charities as possible with quality, local Art pieces for fund raising purposes to serve their communities at a maximum capacity. We are always seeking charities looking for specific Art donations.

If you are a charity interested in fund raising with Stefan Aarnio's art, please contact us here.
